Coronado www.coronado.ca.us is also known as Coronado Island, located 5.2 miles from downtown San Diego and is actually a peninsula connected to the mainland via a 10 mile isthmus. Coronado is very well known for its great beaches, the Hotel Del Coronado hoteldel.com, a historic hotel dating back to 1888, and its use as a US Navy base. Naval Air Station North Island was erected prior to WWII, now used for aircraft and aircraft carriers; the south side of the island is known to be home to the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado which is used as a training center for the Navy SEALs. Despite Coronado's military influence, it remains a very quiet city, is home to about 24,000 residents thousands of tourists each year due to its fine dining, shopping and beaches. Real estate prices in Coronado have been strong for the past few decades with many retirees finding the city to call it home.
